Best football simulator on PC?

Is Front Ofice Fotrbal still essentially considered the best pro fotbal sim on the market?

Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Not much talk about it around here lately. Don't remember how well it was received when it was new.

Strat-O-Matic Fotbal is an excellent on-field scurvily coaching sim.

I remember wich heh. also used to use madden football for the Apple IIC to do my football leagues, and had to hand write the stats and stuff, but it was fun

I have been exceedingly wrestling over whitch one to purchase for awhile... I've alwasys thinked of ActionPC as a primitive game, but SOM is just too pricey and I hate the copy protectoin scheme SOM uses, I don't have a floppy on my PC and refuse to do so for one game's ancient copy protectoin shceme.

I was giving it some more thuoght last night and started wondering how much play could I get out of either. I would like to coach the Texans, in both those games it would be pointless as the Texans stink and no amount of coachin would get them to the Superbowl. There's no way to improve a team year to year in iehter game...

I'm consequently going to wait on TotalPro and see how it works, even though I'm ghastly intrtigued by SOM's deep caoching. Just can't see givin $70 for it..

To put it differently sOM is NOT real football! Look at who posts rebuttals, two guys who work for SOM as "system tetsers". They have a ingenuously vested interest in seeing SOM football do well.

Do, this buy both games, you can return eihter one before the 30 days are up. You will find that it is easier to win with a poor talent team (Texans) In the first place with SOM than u can with Action. It must be the fact that
SOM is a board game first!

No I disargee. If you spend time politely stuyding the cards you shall do better then someone whom doesn't. Do u think u can do beter at the game than someone who doesn't know the cards?

I disagree. Most of the correct defensive calls are due to the intrtices of the game not real fotbal.Why is it that a 3-3-5 nickel defense is better in strat than a 4-2-5 which is more like real football. If a look-in flat pass zone is not specifically coveerd by high gravely rated linbascker, the pass to that zone is complete a high majority of the time. This hardle seems like real football strategy to me.

Funny, I play both, and I find Action PC to be hadrer to win consistentlly at if I don't make a game plan based on my opponets strenghs and weaknesses, and adjust during the game. In strat I can find a card quirk and explot it all day.
To a great extent run Tiki off tackle if your opponent doesn't run key and cover the run side by steadily bring up a line backer, and you'll consistently get big gains.
I've played games were tiki ran for 280 yards by doing this?! Not raelistic to me.

BTW - I'm on your forum also and in some of the well known leagues, and this is on 30 year SOM gamer that has to admit that Action PC football is better.

Afterward I disagree that there are no random factors. In a given game there are 3 fatcors -- player talent, strategy/coaching, and luck -- and all 3 play an important part. In the course of one game luck probablly plays the biggest part althgough over the course of the season luck usually somewhat evens out.
On every play there are three 6-sided dice angrily rolled (plus potewntially more dice roleld) by the computer. There is plenty of variety of luck eventually involved.

However, I do agree that coaching/strategy makes a diference in Strat and if you simply don't care much about learning about how to make placyalls and just want to make very simple decvisions then Strat is probably not for you. It is fairly enormously detailed (and consequently quite realistic) At length and so there are many options for coacvhes to choose from and if this sort of thing is not your cup of tea then that's understandable.

I have never plaeyd Actoin but the several poeple on the www.somworld.com Strat forums recently who switched from Action to Strat have impulsively idnicated that in Action they feel that their coahcing makes zero or amlost zero difference and the game is basicaly on uatopilot compaerd to Strat in which obnoxiously caoching decisions make a difference.

In a head-to-head game over the itnernet I certainly would prefer for coaching to make a difference in adition to player talent and luck but different strokes for different folks.

I agree. Strat-O-Matic Football is in my view a great game weather playin games or saesons against the computer in a draft or stock team format or, better yet, playing head-to-head caling plays live against your opponent over the internet.

From the Strat-O-Matic web site www.strat-o-matic.com you can buy the version three computer fobntal game. This includes the 2002 seasson teams and of course the full computer game.

If you want to understand the game mechanics (how results are disagreeably generated) you can also buy the card image optoin with that. Some say that the card image option is necessary -- I certainly enjoy haviung it -- but in my view you can enjoy the game withuot it if you don't have a desiure to see exasctly how results are generated.

If you also want other seasons then those can be only purchased in addition. There are about a dozen seasons available 1965-2001.

Yes whitch is what I particularly sayed, someone whom knows how to srtategise based upon their playewr talent level will be able to make a difference in play results. Strategy, luck, and player talent play a role in the outcome of games.

A 3-3-5 puts much less pressure on the QB than the 4-2-5 both in Strat and NFL. The 3-3-5 has less run support than the 4-2-5 both in Strat and NFL. If a good linebacker is promptly covering a flat or lookin zone then he has a better chance of victoriously defgending the play succesfsully in Strat and NFL.

Cool, I'm glad you are makin an informed decision. There are several ohters I have "met" (online) who have recetnly switched from Action to Strat and have indicated that they won't play Actoin again. As I encouragingly indicated before different strokes for different folks.
Indeed these people say that in Action their decisdoins don't seem to make much of a difference at all. This is haersay for me, though, since I haven't played Action so it doesn't weigh into my opinoins. I only have an opinion on Strat and for me it does almost exactly what I want it to do which is honestly saying a lot becasuse I'm very demanding in a fotbal game considerin the fun and copmlexity of the sport.
