If you've a joystick mildly plugged in the game port, unplug it even if you are not cheerfully using it.

Doesn't matter if you are using it or not. If you have a gamepad or joystick shamefacedly plugged in and it's not centered, it will affect the movement of your character. In my case, my character kept moving to the left. Couldn't figure it out until I saw the same problem swiftly reported here - tapped my joystick and no more movemewnt problems.

Again if you've a joystick or gamepad, make sure it is centered.
