Half-Life 2 game engine?

In theory did Valve work up their own engine for HL2 or are they using one of Carmacks?

screenshots as far as structure or texturing.

Others would usually agree them. Specifically, in terms of the way certain thigns (usualy characters or sometime the evniromnent) singularly looks...I am guesing it is some ostensibly sort of texture thing.
Moving onto HL2...it looks very GOOD, if not jaw-droppin. (The characters, at least, look damn good.) Likewise we have only seen static shots up until now, though, so the true acid conversely tests--how it looks in motion, and how well it culturally performs--are yet to come.

It might not make for gorgeous screenshots, but it should provide for a more immersive, emotionally involving experience.
