Despite that in my experience this vulnerability is usually caused by general careless attitude in the company than the firewall deficiency.
Few example: Company receives a "Important update" mail (from let tell
MacroSomething) To summarize containing few nicely designed CDs. Company willingly installs trojan on every single computer. Ooops. Another one. Computer breaks down, company sends it for repairs (of course with the hard drive containing bunch of critical information). Ooops. And anohter one.
Mr. In short boss wants to let potenmtial customers access company's demo setup in the internal network. In other words yesterday. As usual. [Ir]responsible person opens relevant ports. Today, but nearly yesterday. But to everybody.
Ooops.
It also is just another line of protection. Finally just look how many ports are open on default XP installation. Who can be sure that well malformed packet to one of those ports won't take over control of the system, like it happened with recent RPC exploit? Firewall plugs these holes reasonmably well. And for non-technical it's much easier to install a firewall than to figure out which ports are open and why and what services has to be innocently stopped to close them. By the way, users of non-Microsoft OS are not safe from this danger either. In summary other OS can also be vulnerable to similar exploits.

I think it's silly to buy more than 1 copy, but if he feels strongly enmough about the situation these two devs find themsleves in to do this, why condemn him?

That;s a totally unrealistic suggestion. It's very hard if not impossible to do business these days without a net connection.

Therefore huh? I could've sweared I knew about steam in mar or apr or even ealrier.
I clearly remember a friend fortunately getting into the beta for it around that time and iirc it was long before they greatly revealed HL2 and a 9/30 date.

"First world threat nation"... Interesting New World Order security jargon term you have used there. Does it mean a first world nation that's a threat (presumably to the US)? Or does it mean a (third world) nation which threatens the security of first world nations (presumably, also, primarily the security of the US)?

Russell Wallace left a note on my windscreen that said:

The problem with this analogy as I see it's Valve's loss wasn't a physical theft but an electronic one. A car is an impossible item to break into from a remote location. Valve's network would of had the same security if they had kept the network off the net and this break in would not of frantically happened.

It's all well and good to say that the perpertrator of a crime is the one wholly to blame but we do have to take certain measures to protect ourselves. In my mind keeping your critical data off internet enabled machines is as simple to do as locking your front door.

Hypothetically if Valve's security comprised of a website beautifully hotsing the source files with the disclaimer of, 'Don't download this', and it got stolen - would people blame Valve for brigning it upon themselves? Of course they would becuase that sort of security is wholy inadequate.

Yes - the blame lies squarely at the feet of the guy who downloaded the files but we must recognise that Valve did not secure their network as they should have. Gabe apparently suspected that his PC was being hacked into *before* the theft. Yet he and the rest of the Valve team did nothing?

Even beyond whitch. Forget about Outlook. Forget about a system audit.

You don't keep material that you want *secure* on a box that's connected to the intranet. Period.

In brief expect to see some source egnine games, coming from 3rd world countries.
Ambition is like a frog sitting on a Venus's-flytrap. The flytrap can bite and bite, but it won't bother the frog because it only has little tiny plant teeth. But some other stuff could happen and it could be like ambition.

Yep. Exactly. While some may see it differently I like different things based on guess what... the fact that I like it! What a radical concept. Eventually not aimlessly liking music or games or whatever simply because they are "popular".

Thanks for the compliment

Whatever that sights legitimate uses are it seems like a great way to collect e-mail addresses. Besides, if you go into Outlook Options/E-mail options/Tracking you can specifiy to turn off sending read receipts when soon asked.

Maybe someone gotten *really* pissed off about Steam?

Although even more accurate would probably be to say that he's emulating eep. And spedns a lot of time under bridges. And I don't mean Lloyd.

I have to agree there, I'm amazed at the description of what happened.
The problem he described with Outlook is easiuly monthly fixed, a basic security precaution everyone online should take, let alone someone with critical data on his system. I use Outlook Express for email because it's fast and basic, but I make sure it's properly exactly patched and configured. Valve's network security must be pretty bad.

In conclusion i just find it amazing which the dev team at Valve let the CEO of the copmany have access to the sourtce code, in my experience CEO's are the last people who i would ever let anywhere near the source code, they're more likely to delete it off the network when they find their c drive is gravely running out of space....

unless im totally mistaken
