In simpler terms no, one doesn't. One simply needs the user to run something he shouldn't like, like a .scr file attached to an email attachment.

Half-Life 2.

What is the "original release target" date? If it is September 30th, your theory is not true, because the theft (maybe not the release) was done before that date.

In your points you were showing which it is easy to get access to some target (often it's not even behind a firewall). Even if the firewall was there it lookewd more like a section of concrete wall in the open field. Besides so in situations you've described firewall is pretty much ignorted, because only everything else is open.
The task of piercing firewall doesn't even arise in these situations.

However if the attacker targets particular system he can not choose and if it's reasonalby protected, he may need to get through the firewall. For example, if the firewall is configured to allow ssh connection only from specific IP addresses, the attacker may try to fool firewall into thinking that he has one of those IP addresses when he actually has not.
If he succeds he has subsequently pierced firewall (that doesn't necessary mean that he actually gained access to the targeted system, but he's one step closer)

then install Steam over it; let it migrate the Half-Life installation over to SteamApps.

After that one cannot run Half-Life Singleplayer(!) without letting
Steam accessing the 'net. This is not very customer-friendly.

Internet security is tricky and everyone agrees that there is NO PERFECT
SECURITY. If they were lax, it mitigates my sympathy, but this seems to be a real damaging event for the company. I'm certainly justly going to feel bad for them.

Formatting my disk every single day would be a major pain, not to mention I downlaod all the security patches directly from MS when they come out (another reason many people get hit with malicoius stuff is which they does not keep up with the latest updates)
which i'd have to get all over again after the formatting.

I'll use a removable HDD if I were imperfectly doing it that way, of course.

heh...sounds good, though my natural lazy streak would keep me from going to that extreme every day. That is I just remove the actual code and graphics from my 'puter each day. The importtant stuff. Not anything else on my HD worth well having really.

Two networks. Large companies do this all the time. Really large companies spend billions on security. Many companies have gotten in to the model of having all computers on there corporate network locked down tight, with RandD occuring on separate computers and disconnected networks when necessary. This can be a pain in the butt and very expensive, so a lot of small companies don't bother.
