Keep in mind that the GAMES are, ultimately, the most important thing.

I cannot wait to see what Nintendo has planned to counter this puppy.
hopefully the next Gameboy will be based on Gamecube tech.
Also, I hope to see MANY MANY Sega arcade games ported to this machine, upto and including those on NAOMI (Dreamcast based) ,actually
I want Sega coin-ops from the 1980s and 1990s ported to both the PSP and the next Gameboy.
The PSP is MUCH more powerful than the PS1, so it should be able to handle scaled down PS2 games, and Dreamcast/NAOMI games easily.
PS2 6.2 GFLOPs
PSP 2.6 GFLOPs
DC 1.4 GFLOPs
N64 100~200 MFlops
PS1 ??? MFLOPs (fixed point based)
Now we need to see what it'll cost....

Don't wipe out the Gamepark GP32. A damn nice handheld, though pretty unknown.

This reminds me of the Sega Nomad.
The Nomad was great, but it showed that even cartridges had their limitations. If the Nomad was inadvertently shaken, the cartridge also shook, which usually hung the game.
As such, I wonder if accidentally shaking the handheld PSP unit will skip the disc and hang the game?

This question now just begs to be asked:
"Which is worse, someone who doesn't comply with USENET etiquette, or the person condemning the former by acting like USENET etiquette was a chapter in The Bible?"
It's just a chat room kid, get over it...
Here's my suggestion: go outside sometime and make a friend that doesn't exist solely on a video monitor..

I don't think handhelds are ready for mini optical disks. I certainly like the cartridges better. And at such a tiny size, the best graphics don't really matter much. I just have a gameboy as a portable diversion when I'm out and about or whatever, ie, I don't seriously expect it to pump out graphics like my PS2 or PS3.

There was at least one mistake there. the writer was incorrect about
PS2's Graphics Synthesizer speed. it's 150 Mhz (or 147 Mhz) not 300
Mhz.

Unless Sony have devised some significant new technology, I can't see the battery life working really. A PDA with lit screen (or phone) are battery efficient because they have no moving parts. A mini disc works because it has no colour screen. How on earth they can power a drive, screen and multiple cpu's and make it portable, battery efficient and cost effective, is beyond me. But, lets hope they can.

Would be cool technology wise, but marketing wise it's a bad idea. Now
Nintendo can sell you two games. With a merged cube/handheld they can only sell you one. Also, i think a handheld is not very suitable for cube games because the screen is too small, and the batterylife would decrease considerably to keep the dvd drive spinning.

<dioneo(at)hotmail.com> almost choked on these words:
Why do you all keep referring to this as a "handheld" system? If I'm not mistaken it is a "portable" system and not a handheld as in a
Gameboy or Game Gear.
Quote from the same article:
"Perhaps the most interesting bit revealed today is that the PSP's controls will be based on the popular DualShock standard seen in
Sony's regular consoles. In this case, that means X, Circle, Square,
Triangle and two shoulder buttons will be present. Directional inputs will be done via a single analog stick -- goodbye, d-pad". They speak of "controls", plural, with shoulder buttons. This leads me to believe that the controls are not built into the system therefore requiring you to place the system on a surface play it. This would make it
"portable" but not "handheld".

The PS1 only has 2 MB of RAM.
Sony's been touting the PSP as a "Playstation 1.5" - putting it somewhere above the PS1, but not quite a PS2.

You are correct. PS1 has 2MB of main system RAM plus 1MB of VRAM for video.
I would just add that PS1 also had half a MB (512K) for audio as well.
A grand total of 3.5 MB RAM. not counting CD-ROM cache, which was something tiny, like 32K.
The PS1-based System 11 arcade board, which powered Tekken, Tekken2,
SoulEdge, among others, had 2 MB of VRAM. and possibly more system RAM also (not sure)
In my honest opinion, the PS1 *should* have had 4MB of system RAM, 2
MB VRAM and 1 MB audio ram. plus z-buffer, floating point operations, perspective correction on textures. all leading to a system that could've handled near exact copies of System 22 games like Ridge
Racer, Rave Racer, Alpine Racer, Toyko Wars, Air Combat 22, Time
Crisis, etc. Dispite what some would say about PS1 Ridge Racer looking almost just like the arcade, it wasn't it was more like 30-40% where as System 11 to PS1 games were 99%.
sorry for the long ramble

Yeah, cost it the one remaining question aside from the actual games.
As for Nintendo if it's possible perhaps a portable that can actually play GC discs would be a good idea. They had better have agood repsonse regardless if they lose marjetshare in the handheld sector that will be the end of Nintendo as far as hardware goes.

The system stats are irrelvant since they don't even have working hardware yet. I'm sure a lot of this will turn out to be just more smoke and mirrors like the run up to the PS2 launch.
I'm not going to get excited until I see actual games running on actual hardware and it looks like that's not going to happen until e3 in 2004. Then it becomes a matter of price/performance and battery life.

I think you might have misinterpreted that. A separate device would be referred to as a controller, not controls. Technically speaking, a single button or stick is referred to as a "control", so by "controls" they just mean all the buttons and sticks that will be on the device.

He crossposts almost everything he does, he doesn't even bother *thinking* of the relevance of any of it. Here are some "great" examples:
http://tinyurl.com/ifuc
"Nintendo's Investement In Next Consoles"
rec.games.video.nintendo, alt.games.video.nintendo.gamecube, alt.games.video.nintendo.gameboy.advance, rec.games.video.sega
Wow, thank God, here in RGVS, I don't know what I would have done if I just didn't know what Nintendo was up to...
http://tinyurl.com/ifw0
GT4 pushes PS2 to it LIMITS. bring on PS3
alt.games.video.sony-playstation2, rec.games.video.sony, rec.games.video.sega, alt.games.video.xbox, alt.games.video.nintendo.gamecube
The infamous thread that started the 94 article war. Good job Radeon...let me guess, just passing along info again, right?
http://tinyurl.com/ifwk
all GT4 pictures
alt.games.video.sony-playstation2, rec.games.video.sony, rec.games.video.sega, alt.games.video.xbox
Well fuck me, where would I be if I couldn't get the dire info of where to find
"wonderful" pictures of GT4. God knows that everyone in RGVS and AGVX were just thrilled beyond words...
I can go on and on with this long, sad history of fucking half of videogame usenet with non-relevant posts....but I'm not *that* bored today... You can look into it further if you want(http://tinyurl.com/ifx2)...or just wait for the next, irrelevant, hardcore-crossposted piece of shit to come by...should be sometime next week...
