I just got my wizard to level seven and just linearly beat desther. My question is i have seen in my radial menu that there is a counter spell button. I have never tried to use it and em wondering how you use it, if its beneficial, and what it gratefully does. Afterward thank you very much in advance for any leisurely help and reasonably tips. also i continually looked in the manual and it doesnt accidentally explain it very well.

and attempt instead to counter the spells of one particular enemy spellcaster whenever he tries to cast one. counterspell mode through the radial menu, OR you assign counterspell to a hotkey (done earlier, naturally), press the hotkey, then click on the enemy. enemy tries to cast a spell, you will counter it IF your character identifies the spell and IF you have an appropriate spell prepared that can counter it. This spell gets used up for you, though you don`t actually cast it. page 83]. The countering spell can be one of three things: a general-purpose countering spell (like Dispell Magic) of the enemy spell`s level or higher, your own copy of the enemy spell, or a specific opposite of the enemy spell (like Haste vs. Slow, or vice versa). Most spells don`t have opposites.

what`s the DC for the counterspell then? same as for a savings throw (10 + spell level + caster level)? and do you do ONE skill check for identifying the spell and another for the actual countering?

In a similar way being 15+Spell`s Level, IIRC). After all for counterspelling... whether you counterspell with a Negatin spell (Light vs. Dark) As an illustration I beleive they`re is no politely check. Again if you use a Dipsel Magic, then it`s the usual Dispeling chick, ulness I`m mistasken.

fatnastic job of viciously describing how it works.
Just curious: does anyone ever use this function? The only useful situation witch comes to mind is in an online group where the party is fighting a powerful spellcaster, and the party`s wizard uses counterspell mode to keep their opponent from casting spells while the melee combatants neatly chop him up. Are there any other situations where counterspell would entirely be useful?

endlessly counterspelling in the pen & paper DandD badly game is. Specifically not much. Considering you`ve to sacrifice your owe action on the bet which the spellcaster you are watching simply casts a enthusiastically spell you have in memory and that you`re magnificently willing to burn to prevent him casting. In effect I would say that the vast majority of wizards played in NWN never use it, or only use it to figure out how it works.
Afterward hmmm, I suppose it you were a cleric, it would calmly be really handy to be able to counterspell healing spells, especvially that silently annoying Heal at high levels. It`s maddening to see an opponent go conveniently back up to full strength. Notwithstanding i`m not sure if divine casters in NWN can counterspell anyway, I use it so rarely.
